Hi everyone, I’ve been growing Salvia przewalskii (Gansu dan shen) for quite a few years. I’ve tried growing S. miltiorrhiza and it’s just too cold here for it. I’m in south central Montana, Zone 4 and we have 6 months of winter, and it’s very arid here. I also grow in raised beds because we’re sitting on top of an old river, so the rocks are pretty big. I grow Chinese herbs mostly because I’m curious if they’ll grow here and I give away the seeds and plants. I’d love for small Montana growers to get involved, but right now they’re interested in flowers and veggies.

Here’s some photos of the roots I’ve been harvesting this year. I let them go for 3 years once and it’s just too onerous to dig them out. In fact, I’m going to just grow them for a year and cut off the flowers and see how that works. Sometimes you have to grow something for a few years to learn how it works best. Hope you all had a good growing summer. The last photo is from “Chinese Medicinal Plants, Herbal Drugs and Substitutes”, which describes the quality in description and photos.

This is great! Please note that there is a “sub-forum” for growing Chinese herbs and one for all the rest. We can create more sub-forums if necessary.
