Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

One of North America’s most enduring medicinal plants, extracts are still found in places like CVS and Wallmart, as well as most every pharmacy in the US. The bark and leaves are astringent and preferred for a number of applications to the skin.
A native and important understory shrub or small tree in the region, it has a rather strange flower that appears during the winter months, making this native a bit peculiar but special in its own way.

Beach Rose (Rosa rugosa)

Commonly cultivated and somewhat invasive along the coast from Maine southward, this Asian species of rose is a fine tea (made from the dried buds) and is known as meiguihua (玫瑰花) in Chinese medicine.
Rose is soothing to the soul in so many ways. Prefers well-drained areas and will fill space if not kept in check.

Black choke cherry (Aronia macrocarpa)

A native to eastern North America, this shrub is commonly cultivated in Europe for its exceedingly nutritious fruit. This rose family plant grows to 3-6 feet tall and wide, with white flowers and blackish fruits.
While a bit acrid and bitter fresh, the fruit makes excellent sauces, jams, and other nourishing culinary additions.
